Changing actors' perception - for a better booking rate

It has been hard for me to explain to others what professionalism means for a long time. Then I started to coach actors :) I immediately realized how other actors worked (or did not work) to get the thing they wanted the most: success. 

Let me give you an example:

Let’s imagine you receive a work email from an industry professional you have never met. Now:

  1. How much time do you let pass before answering it?
  2. What subconscious message can your timing possibly send to the addressee?
  3. What is the tone of your email? Is it friendly, conversational, or formal?
  4. In what technical ways could your message be shortened?
  5. What is your first thought when you open the links you provided in the email? (try them first - that is other's first thought too)
  6. What edits would make your showreel upsell you as an international actor or actress?
  7. Is the ending of your email inviting for an answer or an action to be taken? If not, what could be added next time?
  8. After sending your message, is there any other action you took to connect with this industry professional?
     

Do you see my point?

Without realizing it, we send so many subconscious messages to our colleagues and clients. 

I always recommend actors to ask themselves this one magic question when they work with other industry professionals; let them be an agent, a publicist, a PR person, a stylist, or whoever is connected and related to your work. 

Let me give you another example of how you can MAKE THEM LIKE YOU, AND LOVE WORKING WITH YOU!

When you have to work close to other professionals, ask yourself: 

How can I save them time?

 

Now, I know we already work instead of others. For example, when we self-tape, we are our makeup artist, hairdresser, DOP, sound engineer, editor, DIT, director, etc. Now let’s not discuss the fairness of all this, but do you know the purpose of all that? 

Yes! It is saving them time! And they will love you if you help them be more time-efficient and save them extra work. Here are a few examples: 

Think with their head: 

  1. When promoting your film, bring a different outfit to all the various titles you give interviews to - this way, you can show them you are professional.
  2. When they send you questions for an interview, it is hard to type all the text in and be expressive and contained. So instead, try recording an audio file on your phone! You’ll see that you won’t only save time for them and yourself. Your true intention, personality, and the nuances of your message get through much better and can be captured by a journalist with the right words. 
  3. Any other ideas to put your co-workers in a good light?
    Make their life easy, and they will make yours.
